FAQ
Here you can find answers to some of the most common questions about BIRCON. If you have any other questions, please vistit our Contact page.
Tickets
Do I need an account to buy a ticket?
Yes, creating an account lets us connect your ticket to your name and gives you access to session signups and community features.
Can I buy a ticket for someone else?
Yes. After purchasing, you can assign the ticket to another registered user.
Sessions & Games
How do I sign up for a game or session?
Once you have a ticket and are logged in, you can browse available sessions and enroll with a few clicks.
What happens if a session is full?
Everyone will be guaranteed a spot in at least one session. If the game you want to play is full, you'll be added to the waitlist and added automatically if a spot opens up.
Do I need to enroll for all sessions I'm interested in?
No, you only need to enroll for sessions with limited availability. Sessions with unlimited availability - such as performances, or the raffle results - are open to all. Furthermore, the lottery will only run for sessions with more enrollments than available spots. If a session has a large number of spots - such as a panel - it's very likely that you will get in.
Lottery
How does the lottery work?
During the enrollment period, you can select sessions you're interested in. Two days before the event, our system randomly assigns people to one of the sessions they're interested in. Each session has up to 5 available spots. If a session has more people than spots, we run a fair lottery to decide who gets in. If a session has less people than spots, everyone gets in.
Will everyone get into at least one session?
This is our goal. We have more seats than participants, so it is possible. However, we cannot control who wants to play which session. The lottery system is our genuine attempt to maximize the chance that most people play at least one game they really want. The alternative would be first-come-first-serve, which dramatically favours those who - for different reasons - can be quick to sign up. The lottery ensures everyone has a fair shot.
When will I know if I got into a session?
You'll be notified after the lottery runs and will see your assigned session in your dashboard.
Can I sign up for multiple sessions?
Yes! You can express interest in as many sessions as you'd like during enrollment. However, you'll only be allocated to one session maximum through the lottery.
Does selecting more sessions hurt my chances?
Yes, but fairly so. We assume people who select fewer sessions care more about those specific ones. If you select 2 sessions and someone else selects 10, you'll have 5 times better odds than them for the sessions you both want. Think of it this way: spreading your interest thin means lower chances per session, but more overall chances.
If I only enroll for one session, could I end up with nothing?
If more than 5 people want that same session, yes, it's possible you might not get it. However, enrolling for just one session gives you the maximum possible chance in the lottery for that specific session. Your odds depend on how many others want the same session and how many other sessions they've selected.
Is the lottery truly random?
It's random but weighted. Everyone who wants a session has a chance to get in, provided they haven't already been assigned to another session. Your odds depend on how many total sessions you selected. Once the weights are set, the selection is random.
Can I improve my chances of getting into at least one session?
Apart from selecting sessions with fewer enrollments than the maximum number of players, we can't say how to maximize chances. It may be possible, but we designed the algorithm to avoid this. The choice you have is between spreading your chances across multiple sessions, or focusing on fewer.
Why wasn't the lottery system communicated earlier?
This is the system we used last year and it was communicated on our website, although not as thoroughly. We did not have all the inner-workings ready to communicate in advance because the size and scope of our roster of Game Masters and events only became clear a few weeks before the event.
Why will I only find out my session 2 days before the event?
We run the lottery shortly before the event so we have the chance to offer the maximum number of sessions to everyone. The schedule is growing even days before the event.
Will the lottery detect if I sign up for conflicting time slots?
Yes. The system knows which sessions run simultaneously. However, this is only relevant if you are hosting a session, since as a participant, the system will only assign you to one session.
What happens after the lottery runs?
Everyone who was interested in a session will be added to the waitlist. If spots become available, we'll follow a first-come-first-served basis to fill the spots, using the lottery results for the ordering. Beyond that, you are free to enroll in any other sessions with available spots, and add your name to the waitlists.
